Accessories for your Meditation Practice

In the world today, it seems like there’s an accessory for everything. Even the things that are as simple and pure as can be!

Meditation is no different and there are definitely an assortment of accessories for you to enhance your meditation practice.

Now some people may say that adding “the extras” into your practice goes against the simplistic teachings of meditation and the religions that promote this practice, but I think “if it helps you, then why not!”

Some common extras that can you help you with your practice are discussed below.

1. Meditation CD’s, Meditation MP3’s and Meditation Audios

Guided meditations or meditation music that simply induces a state of relaxation are great accessories to add to your practice! When I initially began meditating, I found guided meditation cd’s to be very useful. They gave me something to focus my attention on and this was much needed for me to overcome my busy mind. Now I find it much easier to get into a meditative state (with a clear, relaxed mind) easily without the aid of meditation mp3’s or cd’s but there are occasional days that I choose to incorporate these into my practice.

Listening to meditation music is also a great way to help you relax, unwind and clear your head of thoughts. I typically choose to listen to this type of music when I want to relax but not necessarily meditate but be careful not to listen to meditation music designed to change the frequency of your brain waves if you don’t plan on actually meditating because this can affect your performance or concentration without even realizing it!

2. Candles and Scents

It’s very useful to “set the mood” for your meditation session and this is easily done by incorporating candles or aromatherapy scents into your practice. Lavender is a common scent that is used for relaxation but there are many other scents out there for the purpose of relaxation. Maybe you’d prefer meditating with a rejuvenating or invigorating scent, the choice is yours so try a few out to see what works best for you!

Candles are great because they provide beautiful scents and a relaxed lighting atmosphere.

3. Meditation Chairs and Mats

When you meditate you can choose to sit on the ground, on a comfortable chair, bed, etc. Again, the choice is yours so try out a few positions on different surfaces to find the ones that work best for you.

Often, a simple mat provides that extra touch of comfort needed throughout a meditation session, but meditation chairs are also available to purchase. Meditation chairs are designed to offer you more support throughout your meditation practice and add comfort into your practice. Remember that meditating is a personal thing and it’s up to you what you choose to incorporate. Play around with music, lighting, chairs, etc. to ensure you get the most out of your meditation session.
