Vipassana Meditation

What is Vipassana Meditation?

Vipassana meditation is an ancient meditation technique that developed in India. It’s one of the earliest forms of meditation and was founded over 2500 years ago by Gautama Buddha.

Similar to mindfulness meditation, vipassana mediation focuses on being connected with the mind and body by truly experiencing ones thoughts and sensations. As thoughts come to mind, recognize them but allow them to pass. The desired outcome of this practice is to sit for a designated time period (20 minutes is a great goal!) with a peaceful, thought free mind. This may seem unrealistic or unachievable at first, but with time and practice is it possible. It is also one of the types of mediation commonly practiced by Buddhist monks.

The main goal behind this meditation technique is to achieve a calm, inner peace that surfaces when the mind is clear of all thoughts. It is said that through self-observation, self-transformation is possible. Vipassana literally means insight, so it makes sense that this practice is about observing ones self to gain insight to further personal development.

Practicing vipassana meditation on a regular basis has many benefits, including self discovery, detaching from ones ego and an overall sense of peace and happiness.
